Top Fraud-Prevention Tips

1. Keep Your Contact Info Updated
We use text or email alerts when we detect unusual activity on your account. If you haven’t received an alert recently, make sure your phone number and email address are current.
2. Use Strong & Unique Passwords

  • Create distinct strong passwords for your online banking, mobile app, and email.

  • Consider using a password manager.

  • Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) whenever available.

3. Be Wary of Unsolicited Requests
Whether it’s a phone call, text message or email:

  • Stop. Don’t act immediately.

  • Think. Is this really from PSCU or a trusted source?

  • PSCU will never ask for your PIN, password or full social security number via email or text.

  • If something seems off, call us directly using a number you know is correct (e.g., the one on the back of your card or our website).

4. Protect Your Devices & Accounts

  • Keep your computer and mobile device operating system and apps updated.

  • Install and maintain reputable anti-virus and anti-malware software.

  • Use secure Wi-Fi networks—avoid public Wi-Fi for banking or shopping unless you’re using a trusted VPN.

5. Monitor Your Accounts Regularly

  • Log in to your online banking frequently and review your statements.

  • Set up transaction alerts (e.g., notifications for purchases > $X or outside your typical geography).

  • If you see a transaction you don’t recognize, contact PSCU immediately.

6. Safeguard Your Card at the Point of Sale

  • Be alert when using an ATM or card reader; cover the keypad.

  • Avoid letting your card leave your sight at restaurants or stores.

  • If your card is lost or stolen, or you notice a suspicious charge, report it immediately so we can take action.

7. Recognize Common Scams

  • Phishing & smishing: Fraudsters impersonate PSCU or other trusted entities, asking you to click links or provide login info.

  • Impersonation calls: Someone claims to be from PSCU, the IRS, Social Security, or law enforcement demanding payment. PSCU will never call and demand money or threaten account suspension without giving you time to verify.

  • “Too good to be true” offers: Prizes, lotteries, or investment schemes promising high returns with no risk are almost always scams.

  • Account takeover: Someone uses stolen credentials to change email addresses or request new cards. You can help prevent this by securing your contact info and communication channels.

  • Elder fraud / family scams: Scammers exploit trust by posing as family members or emergency situations. Talk with older family members about spotting warning signs and verify any requests for money.

In the Event of Fraud

  • Call PSCU immediately if you suspect unauthorized transactions.

  • We’ll cancel compromised cards, block suspect activity, and help you set up replacement cards or account changes.

  • We’ll assist in placing fraud alerts or credit freezes if needed and guide you on next steps.

  • File a report with your local law enforcement and keep a record of all communications.
